Trump Administration Moves Forward With Vape Ban

By: Haig Simitian

· Domestic Policy

Despite the significant efforts of Juul Labs to cement its status in Washington, President Trump took swift and decisive action in response to the recent influx of vape-related injuries in teenagers and announced a plan to ban the sale of most flavored vaping products. “We can’t have our youth be so affected,” he said from the Oval Office.

The announcement of this new policy sent shockwaves through the vaping industry, particularly to the dismay of big companies like Juul, many of which have carefully and deliberately nurtured relationships with policymakers in an effort to avoid a federal ban. Juul Labs even went as far as to hire senior White House officials closely connected to President Trump and his family, send representatives to West Wing to extol Juul products, and spend big on endorsing lawmakers for advocacy on both sides of the aisle.
Lawmakers cite the increasing pressure from educators, parents, and public health officials to respond to the frightening popularity of vaping amongst American teenagers as the motivation behind the ban. The announcement has been met with extensive opposition from those employed by the vape industry, in particular vape shop owners who claim they could be bankrupt within weeks of the ban’s implementation.
